What
is The Tail of the Dragon?
 The
Tail of the Dragon (the Dragon) is a portion of US 129, located
on the North Carolina/Tennessee border. The Dragon’s claim
to fame is its 318 curves in 11 miles. The Dragon is a highway of
world renown, driven by motorcycle and sports car enthusiasts of
every ilk. The Dragon’s scenic mountain location was also used
as a back drop for a scene in the movie “The Fugitive”
starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones.
About
the Tail of the Dragon (TOD)
New VW Beetle Cruise
TOD
is a 3-day event, beginning with the Friday check-in/meet and greet,
followed by Pizza Fest. Saturday is the Dragon cruise; a day-long
journey consisting of the Cherohala Skyway, followed by riding the
tail of the dragon. Saturday is concluded with dinner at the BBQ
Wagon, fondly named by the TOD attendees as the “neon pig”.
Sunday is known as Six Chuter Sunday, an optional day, where we
either check out after our farewell breakfast get together (GtG)
or stay for a day of leisure and enjoyment of the North Carolina
mountain region.

 Who
started the TOD Beetle Cruise?
TOD
was conceived in the minds of Gary Schreiber and Bob Saueraff in
the fall of 2008 and birthed via the forums of newbeetle.org. The
date of the TOD maiden voyage was set for Saturday May 9th, 2009,
and brought 12 new beetles for the journey. Beetles from 5 states
represented the newbeetle.org event.
The 2010 incarnation of TOD exploded to 53 beetles in attendance
from as far as California.
TOD 2011 proved just as successful as the previous year, and
birthed an official 3rd full day of TOD attendance and activities,
as well as overnight lodging. Named after the newbeetle.org member
who started the aforementioned, “SixChuter Sunday” is
now a part of TOD lore.
2012, the Chinese year of the Dragon, was another year of great
attendance and growth. TOD4 brought “movies at the top”
outdoor movies at the Ridge Top Motel, under the nighttime sky.
Also new to TOD, was a swap meet and a Sunday tour of the local
dams of the region. Important to TOD 2012 was the arrival of the
2012 Beetle--a totally new beetle, continuing the beetle linage
for VW as well as for TOD. TOD4 was graced with an Oprah Beetle--the
2012 Beetles were given away by Oprah Winfrey during her final season.

The next Tail of the Dragon Beetle Cruise will have every facet
of the event improved. Events such as movies under the stars, goodie
bags games, swap meet, additional Sunday morning dragon runs, and
trips to various dams around the region. TOD has become not only
the premier new beetle GtG in the U.S., but a vacation destination.

The Ridge
Top is TOD central & base of operations. The Ridge Top
is a bargain by today's standards. You can book now, which i
suggest. They give you up to 24hrs to your BOOKED DATE to cancel,
before charging/debiting your account. |

Luxury
cash, for souvenirs and TOD gear. the swap meet should be in
effect next year as well. a little extra cash for that would
be nice too. |
